The NCVPS Super Student Award is for students who have gone above and beyond the course requirements and as a result have enriched the content, class dynamic, their own learning, their classmates’ learning, and even their teacher’s learning.
“I hope that in the next couple of years, I’ll have finished writing my book and be able to get it published. When I graduate, I plan to go to college with my best friend at Appalachian and get a double major in creative writing and languages. With that, I’m going to get a job translating and writing novels in my spare time. I also plan to move out of the US, like to Busan, South Korea or someplace similar.” –Sara
“Sara is brilliant. She completes every assignment in a creative way and with such passion and excitement that it makes me eager to read her posts. She is positive and personable. Sara is quite simply the quintessential art student, and I have loved teaching her this semester.” –Alice Morley, NCVPS Art of Game Design Teacher
I started taking online courses earlier this year because my school doesn’t offer that many elective courses that I’m interested in. I began with a Computer Programming class last semester and the game design class this semester. I’ve preferred the game design class much more than my last class. The programming was just a bit too technical to keep me interested very long, but it was good over all. I greatly prefer online class to face-to-face ones because I like working at my own pace.
Advice for Online Students
Take classes you’re interested in, but do some research on them first. I thought I’d really like the computer programming class I took last semester but a couple of weeks in, I was having to force myself to do the work. I haven’t had to do that with the Art of Game Design class. If you aren’t enjoying what you’re learning, you won’t have fun doing the work.
I honestly spend a lot of time on YouTube. Most of the time I don’t even watch the videos, I just have to have something going on in the background or I can’t focus. I enjoy listening to music on there and watching certain YouTubers play video games. My favorites would be JackSepticEye, Markiplier, Cryaotic, and TheRPGMinx. Other than that, I scroll around on Tumblr and Pinterest occasionally, though not as much as I used to.
Gadgets and Things
Out of the devices I have, I use my iPad the most, not counting my iPod touch which I turn on to sleep. I will probably end up using my phone more when I get a new one soon, but as of now, I rarely use it. I bought myself a Playstation 4 for Christmas, but I haven’t really have time to play it, which I hopefully will have this summer.
Work on my book. I basically started it in about eighth grade (I’m a sophomore, almost a junior) and didn’t really work on it much. Last year I kind of did, writing a few short chapters, but it wasn’t until this year that I really started doing anything. So far, I have about 10 chapters, each about 1,500 words apiece. I’m really proud that I managed to get that done.
I really like learning languages. I’m taking French at my school and currently working on a Korean college course online. Once I finish with the Korean courses (there’s two available, I’m in the middle of the first one), I plan to take a Mandarin Chinese course to surprise my friend who speaks Mandarin. One day, I hope to learn Japanese, Latin, and maybe a few more.
That is a dangerously loaded question. I read a lot and I like certain books/series for different reasons. The Throne of Glass series is, I guess, what I’d label as my favorite; the characters and plot are so interesting to me and I can’t wait for the new book to come out next May. Sarah J. Maas, the author of the Throne of Glass series, is one of my favorite writers, and I also really like her other series, A Court of Thorns and Roses. Julie Kagawa is my second favorite author. One of the series she writes, the Iron Fey series, is what I’d call probably my second or third favorite, not necessarily because of the main character, but because of the secondary characters and the story. The Iron Fey is actually what inspired me to write the book that I’m currently writing. Another series I really like is the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan (I count them as one huge series since they revolve around the same characters), and I look really forward to reading another series by him, the Trials of Apollo. Aside from modern young adult type novels, I really like reading Shakespeare and the original Sherlock Holmes stories. As for printed or ebooks? Printed, definitely.
Honestly, a lot of the music I listen to is in Korean. As with the books I like, I like different bands for different reasons. I like GOT7 as more of a group to dance along to because their music is very beat heavy. I prefer to sing to BTS because most of the songs I like by them are very melodious, though I like to dance to them as well. VIXX is group I prefer to watch videos from because a lot of the concepts they do are interesting to see and the persona they have on stage is vastly different from how they really act.
Favorite Movie or TV Show
I don’t really watch TV that much, when I do, it’s generally a Korean Drama online. The latest one I’ve watched was a show called Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, and I really enjoyed it. I’m also currently trying to finish the 2015 live action adaptation of Death Note and it’s pretty good. I’d have to say my favorite movie is Deadpool.
I’m going to Disney World over the summer with my mom and my best friend, Destiny. Destiny has never been, and I haven’t been since I was 4 so we’re going for a week at the end of June.
