NCVPS Experience

This is my first time ever experience with NCVPS and I can tell you that this is not just going to be my last experience. At first, I was hesitant about the idea of taking an online course. I mean, the fact that I, my timid self, will do a class in front of a computer without the assistance of a real teacher, but instead…a virtual one. This mere setup is absolutely new to me. In addition, the thought of taking a foreign language class online which I have no idea nor knowledge of whatsoever is completely overwhelming. Although, my experience with NCVPS tells otherwise. First of all, the NCVPS Canvas website itself is truly straightforward. The tools are easy to control and navigate. Therefore, making it fairly simple and effortless to use for new users like me. Second, the instructors are worth applauding for. My Japanese teacher (Hang Hoang sensei) and my Japanese coach (Kayoko Green sensei) have been very patient of me so far. They have helped me significantly this past few months. Whenever I ask questions varying from translating a sentence to Japanese, to correcting my enunciation of certain Japanese characters, they respond to me as soon as possible and amend me for my errors. They remain enthusiastic and always encouraging for you to do your best and that kind of atmosphere alone makes me even willing to strive harder to excel and enjoy my studies at the same time. Taking an online course did not just help me gain knowledge about my class, but it also taught me to become independent in all types of situation and to manage my time in an efficient manner. So, I just want to take this opportunity to thank all the NCVPS teachers and staff for making NCVPS possible. I am truly grateful of their time and effort not just with me, but also with my other virtual classmates. Without them, I would not have come this far to my education and better yet, my more competent self.

Advice to Online Students

There are 3 things that I always tell myself and I think that you too should also keep in mind. The 3 things are: Self-assurance, Time and Integrity. Self assurance: Do not feel incompetent just because of this whole new different learning environment. Do not feel uncertain just because you think you lack skills or you feel like you’re not capable of doing a class that solely depends on you. Trust me, I did think twice about signing up to an online class, but now I regret for thinking so low of myself. So be confident and take that doubt and uncertain off your mind because I can assure you that you can do it and I may be stranger to you, but I truly believe in you! Time: do your assignments the day it is assigned to you. Make it a habit and do it in a regular basis. Do not procrastinate and wait for it all to pile up in a week or two because catching up is no joke and is a hassle and a nuisance. Not only it can affect your grades, but it can also affect your daily activities and your other classes. Do your assignments ON time or do it AHEAD of time, there is nothing in between. Lastly, integrity: our classes are based in a computer. And as we all know, computers have internet and the ~internet~ has all the answers. It’s not hard to look up the answers during your online quizzes/tests. It’s literally one “new tab” away and these two pair combination of keys: Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. You want to perfect your quizzes and tests? Well guess what? You have to study for it. What is the point of being a student of an online class if you don’t have the characteristics required of being one: honesty and moral uprightness. Prove that you can maintain to be in an online class without the act of cheating. You got this! 🙂

The Internet

My favorite sites would be Twitter and YouTube. I have been using Twitter for 5 years and it never disappoints. It ranges from politics to vine threads to TV show references to celebrity “stan accounts” to what’s happening on the other side of the world at 3am, you name it. The contents are always humorous, entertaining and can also be very informative. Most viral trends are from Twitter, so I never miss what’s going on. YouTube is also one of my favorite sites. Whenever I get bored, I watch the videos that are in my recommendations list and comment as to why YouTube recommended me this specific video. YouTube can redirect you to so many random things like from originally watching a music video to watching a DIY tutorial video to watching a person imitate 100 voices of cartoon characters to watching a series of Strange Addiction episodes and the list goes on and on. This is what makes YouTube very special and truly one of a kind.

Gadgets and Things

My favorite technology gadget is my phone for sure. It is not just because of its material, brand, or popularity. Everything that is significant to me lies in there. My music playlist that relieves my stress, my photo/video albums that brings back memories of my childhood and present life, and my social media sites that keep me entertained and up-to-date. I also use my phone to stay connected and keep in touch with my friends and family on the other side of the world. Therefore, my phone is reasonably important to me.

Goals

My goal for this whole year and not just for this semester, is to personally challenge myself by taking more demanding classes and courses to finish off this year strong-willed and determined. I told myself not to sit idle or procrastinate and most definitely to not let “senioritis” hit me. Especially now that I am a senior and I have to prepare for my post secondary education soon. In addition, I am personally not much of a speaker/talker in terms of real-life conversations, so my personal goal in life has always been me being outside of my private bubble and being more vocal about expressing my opinions to people and not being afraid to speak up if I have to.

Something Random

I am a fangirl of KPOP particularly GOT7, which is a Korean pop boy group that consists of JB, Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, Bambam and Yugyeom. They are genuinely my inspiration and their music simply makes me happy whenever I feel down. I saw them live during a fanmeet in Washington, DC with my internet friends, which is the happiest day of my life. January 21, 2017; save the date.

Favorite Books

To be honest, I am not much of a reader. However, my all-time favorite book would be the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I actually finished reading all the series of this book and I believe is a major accomplishment of mine.

Favorite Song

My favorite song currently is Jasmine by DPR Live. Hong Da Bin aka DPR Live, is a South Korean rapper and singer. I personally love the chill vibe in this song, especially the aesthetic of the music video. I think everyone should appreciate Hong Da Bin (Live)’s talent, and he should get the recognition he deserves, so please have a listen to this song.

Favorite TV Shows

I have too many to mention but my favorite TV show is the Korean drama called W. Plot: Oh Yeon Joo is a second-year cardiothoracic resident doctor. Her father, a famous comic book creator, suddenly disappears one day and then Yeon Joo herself is kidnapped by a strange man covered in blood and taken to a different dimension (comic book). I recommend this drama to everyone especially who loves rom-com and suspense genre.

Interesting Details

I love learning new languages! Learning a whole new language makes me feel like I am in that particular country. I am a Filipino who is fluent in my native language (Tagalog), and my second language (English). I am a self-taught in Korean language, and I am currently taking Japanese as an online class. My next language goal is Mandarin or Thai.
