Meet NCVPS Super Student Molly R.

The NCVPS Super Student Award is for students who have gone above and beyond the course requirements and as a result have enriched the content, class dynamic, their own learning, their classmates’ learning, and even their teacher’s learning.

Molly RMeet Molly

“In ten years I hope to have attained fluency in the Arabic language and have a career in Eastern studies or international policy. I seek to reform the foreign policy of the United States towards the Middle East through establishing increased tolerance and understanding. I find that language offers a way in which to bridge the chasms between cultures and viewpoints to find a pathway to negotiation. ” –Molly R.

“I’m really so proud of Molly, and I’m glad that I had the opportunity to teach her through the course. From the beginning of the course, Molly has demonstrated excellence and responsibility in learning Arabic. She didn’t miss any of her coaching sessions. And she shows an amazing progress with amazing grades. On top of her great English and her Arabic journey, Molly is currently learning Korean and Russian. ” –Georges Marayati, NCVPS Arabic 1 Teacher

Advice for Online Students

I would say that is essential to uncover a way to focus and engage yourself, as taking an online course can be challenging without access to a face-to-face teaching environment. In addition to finding an environment in which you can focus, I would say reading the announcements can be very helpful. The announcements aid in your ability to keep pace with the course.

The Internet

In my free time, I definitely spend the majority of my time on YouTube or news station websites. Youtube offers millions of videos and information through which I can find tutorials and entertainment. I enjoy Youtube for the purpose of pronunciation with other languages. In regard to news outlets, I have a bit of an obsession with international happenings. The news stations offer me access to daily updates on political, social, and economic conditions of other countries.

In addition to YouTube and news outlets, I spend quite a lot of time on Duolingo- where I am learning Korean and Russian. I find Duolingo to be immensely beneficial in learning the alphabets and keeping my Spanish at an acceptable level.

Gadgets and Things

I utilize my computer and Google Pixel most often. I find these forms of technology to be very efficient in terms of communication and my music.

Molly’s Goals

My goal for this semester was to gain an enhanced understanding of the country of Saudi Arabia (each year I attempt to study a country located in the Middle East).

Random Molly

I play the flute whenever I find free time and participate in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Favorite Book

At the moment, my favorite book is Demian by Hermann Hesse. I would say I prefer printed books over ebooks.

Favorite Music

My music taste is quite sporadic and depends largely on my feelings at that particular time. Though due to my interest in Korean, I have been listening to a number of Korean groups, including BTS and IU. I also find a fascination in how Korean music has begun to break the boundary into American music and how people who speak English have begun to accept and find joy in lyrics written in Korean.

Favorite Show

My favorite show is called The Good Doctor, which depicts the life of a surgeon with autism.

Final Thoughts

Last summer I was granted the opportunity to travel to Cuba with the Echo Foundation. This experience will forever reside with me for I was allowed access to a culture quite different from that of the United States. In addition to the ability to explore a unique culture, I found ways in which to traverse the language barrier through music and art.

“Though Arabic is my first online class with NCVPS, I have truly enjoyed the entirety of the course. Upon learning my school did not offer Arabic, I was quite upset as I had participated in the StarTalk Arabic program and fallen in love with the language. Possessing access to the Arabic I course has allowed me to expand my overall ability to write in Arabic and comprehend the intricacies of grammar. In addition to gaining a greater understanding of the Arabic language, the online course has allowed me to expand my knowledge of how online courses function. ” –Molly R.
