[pinned post] Registration is open for Spring 2020. See the 2019-2020 Academic Year tab on our NCVPS Now page or this news post for full details on how to register and what to expect once classes begin.

[pinned post] Request for Sections - If your school needs a yearlong or early start section that we do not currently offer, open a ticket with our Virtual Support Center. We will see if we can make it happen!

[pinned post] Building Your Partnership with NCVPS - Schools typically register with us because of our high-quality courses, N.C. certified teachers, and great flexibility. However, those are standard features for us. We can do so much more! See all the ways we are helping students, schools, and districts across the state on our Partnership page.

12/05/19

Early Start Additions - We've added two courses to our Early Start calendar for Spring 2020:

      • English 2
      • English 2 Honors

You can register for both courses now.

Reserve Funds - Did you know that if your district or charter school uses all its allotted funds, you can continue to enroll using NCVPS reserve funds? Contact us as you near the end of your allotment. We have a short request form for your district e-learning coordinator or charter principal to complete.

Anticipated/Expected EOC/CTE Scores - We will report anticipated/expected EOC/CTE scores for Early Start and Traditional classes in our progress reports on the following dates:

Early Start Classes: Dec. 5, 2019

Traditional Classes: Dec. 19, 2019

State Testing - See all the details about how NCVPS grades and the EOC, CTE, and NCFE state exams schools need to administer on our Grades and Testing Quick Reference Guide.

Course Extension - Our process for extension requests is changing for the Spring 2020 semester, but for Fall 2019, the process will remain the same. NCVPS will grant two-week course extensions for the following reasons:

      • medical (family medical reasons included)
      • IEP/504 reasons (IEP modifications for extended time on assessments does not meet the requirement for course extensions)
      • senior graduation issues

Extensions Requests - Instructional directors will review extension requests on the following dates:

Early Start: Dec. 9, 2019 through Dec. 18

Traditional: Jan. 6, 2020 through Jan. 15

If large portions of the course are missing, an extension will not help the student. We will, of course, work with student situations as we get closer to the end of the semester. We want our students to be successful. What we need now is for the student to work steadily and make progress in the course.

Course extension requests must come from the principal. The principal should include the following information in the ticket to the Virtual Support Center requesting an extension:

      • Student’s name
      • School’s name
      • Course name
      • NCVPS teacher’s name
      • Grade level
      • Reason for extension
      • The final end date being requested for the extension (within the two-week time frame)

An ELA can open the ticket for the principal. Just be sure to include the principal’s email address in the ticket.

Spring Calendar Adjustments - NCVPS is adjusting its Spring 2020 calendar to meet the Office of State Human Resources requirements for NCVPS teachers. Our teachers must take a mandatory 31-day break in service from NCVPS annually to align with NC General Statute § 126-6.3(b). During the mandatory break in service, our teachers are not allowed to complete any tasks (paid or unpaid) for NCVPS.

To meet those requirements, we are ending our Spring 2020 semester two days early, shortening our spring course extension period, and pushing back the start of our summer school.

Here are the adjustments to our calendar:

Spring Block and Yearlong Classes End Dates

Early Start Original: May 8, 2020
Early Start Adjusted: May 6, 2020

Traditional Original: May 29, 2020
Traditional Adjusted: May 27, 2020

Spring Course Extensions

We will have a two-day extension period for Spring 2020 courses. Schools will not submit extension requests via the HelpDesk. Instead, they will work directly with the NCVPS teacher, and the teacher will grant the 2-day extension.

Final Grades Posted

Our dates for posting final grades have not changed:

Early Start: May 14, 2020
Traditional: June 4, 2020

Extension grades will be entered on the final grade report (not a reopened grade report).

Summer School

Moving forward, we will have a shortened summer session. Summer school for 2020 will begin on July 7 and end on August 18. We will work with districts that need grades earlier than that. We will share more details when we finalize our 2020-2021 calendar.

11/21/19

10/30/19

Upcoming Dates - We have a few dates to highlight:

School-Based Peer Tutoring -  NCVPS has a nationally recognized Peer Tutoring Center, and Peer Group Connect is ready to help schools establish their own peer tutoring program. The Center for Supportive Schools is hosting a free event for school-based peer-to-peer mentoring. PGC is a peer-to-peer group mentoring model that trains and mobilizes older, more experienced students - our schools' most underutilized resource - to help ease incoming students' transition into school and that improves school culture, climate, and safety. This free event is on Wednesday, November 20 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the McKimmon Center (1101 Gorman Street, Raleigh, NC). For more details and registration, follow this link.

10/25/19

College Board's Advanced Placement Join Code - Students taking AP courses through an online provider, such as NCVPS, must be enrolled in 2 AP Classroom sections for each course taken online.  (NOTE: Students taking AP courses face-to-face enroll in only one AP Classroom section.  This may potentially cause confusion for students taking both online and face-to-face AP courses.)  All NCVPS AP teachers have created their AP Classroom sections and have provided the join code to all students enrolled in their section.  AP Coordinators at face-to-face schools create "EXAM ONLY" AP Classroom sections and must provide the join code for that section to students.  Joining the "EXAM ONLY" section is necessary for schools to order AP exam materials, but it does not grant students access to AP study resources for the course.  NCVPS students must join the AP Classroom section associated with their NCVPS teacher in order to have access to valuable study resources.

Special Note regarding AP Exam Fees for School Staff:  North Carolina requires students taking an AP Exam to be enrolled in the corresponding course in order for those students to receive state funding for their exam. Students solely enrolled in an exam only section for a given AP subject won’t receive funding in this case. For example, students taking AP courses at a virtual school must be enrolled in both the exam only section at the school where they’ll be taking the exam and a class section for the corresponding course through their virtual school. AP Coordinators at face-to-face schools should confirm that their students are enrolled in both the exam and class section to avoid having their school charged for the corresponding exam registration fees.  AP Coordinators should have students not enrolled in the class section contact their NCVPS teacher immediately to get the join code.

10/24/19

NCVPS Talks - Our next session, "Are Your Students Creators Of Content Or Simply Consumers Of Content?," is scheduled for November 12, 2019, 10 AM.  Join Brian Whitson as he shares how to deepen student engagement and take learning to the next level with Design Thinking and Challenge Based Learning. Brian brings practical experience guiding teachers and classes through the process of creating real-life examples and solving new problems. Follow the link to register!

10/17/19

  • First day to request a course extension
  • Last day to request a course extension
  • Date course extensions end
  • Date course extension grades are posted

We have always announced these dates in our E-lert in the past, but we thought it would be more helpful to have them listed in our NCVPS School Calendar.

10/9/19

The scholarship can be used for tuition, college books, or equipment. Visit https://essayontime.com.au/scholarship/ for details.

9/27/19

Parent Contact Information - NCVPS tasks its teachers to have regular communications with the parents or guardians of their students. However, our teachers often find the contact information in PowerSchool is not accurate. Please help our teachers find update-to-date parent contact information. We can only get that information from the school. We are sure your school will need current parent contact information, too!

9/19/19

2-Click Help for Students - If students need help of any kind with their NCVPS classes, they can visit the homepage of their course or our website for assistance. Help is never more than 2-clicks away!

See our Student Help page for details about how students can find assistance through our website, the Virtual Support Center, the Peer Tutoring Center, and their NCVPS teachers. We also have help for advisors, facilitators, parents, and mentors.

9/26/19

Semester Success with NCVPS - Be sure to check the Sept. 19 progress report to see how your students are performing. The report is posted in our registration system. See our Guide for Accessing Grade Reports for details. Parents, facilitators, and mentors can use the Canvas App for Parents to monitor student progress.

If you have underperforming students, we have a number of supports ready for you. It's still early in the semester, and students have a lot of time to improve their grades, but they should start immediately. Please review the following supports.
  • Student Help Page – If students are having any problems at all, and they aren’t sure where to find help, they should visit our Student Help page. They are never more than two clicks away from help!
  • Teacher Communications - Students do not always advocate for themselves very well. Go ahead and reach out to the NCVPS teacher to see if adjustments can be made for students who are struggling. Our teachers are eager to help.
  • Intervention Strategies – NCVPS has a number of intervention strategies for districts and schools to follow. These are good for any low-performing, under-performing, or at-risk students. Visit our Intervention Strategies page for details.
  • Virtual Support Center – If you have a complicated support question or problem and don't know where to start, open a ticket with our Virtual Support Center. We will escalate your ticket to the right person. Be sure to include the student’s name, PowerSchool ID number, and your school name. If your ticket is about a specific course, please include the course name and teacher name.

9/10/19

Enrollment Options - We can help schools with enrollments throughout the semester. Even after our regular enrollment period ends, we have these options available:

Transfer Students – We can accept transfer students after regular enrollment has ended. Transfer students must be enrolled in the class at the face-to-face school, have seat time with an instructor, and have a passing grade to transfer in with. We must also have an available seat in the course to accommodate the transfer. Contact the Virtual Support Center to transfer students. Be sure to include the following in your ticket:

      • student’s name
      • PowerSchool ID#
      • school name
      • transfer grade
      • course needed
      • any student details that can help the NCVPS teacher

Transfer options will remain open through midterms each semester.

OCS Enrollments – We can still enroll OCS students into existing sections. We can’t open new OCS sections for schools, though.

Flex Learning – We have Flex Learning options available throughout the semester. Contact our Virtual Support Center to enroll students into Flex Learning courses. Be sure to include the student’s name PowerSchool ID#, school name, and course needed.  You can include any details that will help us better support the student.

Semester Success - Visit our Semester Success with NCVPS page for details on how to get the most out of your semester. The page includes our current enrollment options.

504 and IEP Information - If you have students with IEPs or 504s, please communicate the modifications to the students' NCVPS teachers. The modifications are a shared responsibility between NCVPS and student's school.

9/6/19

Waitlisted Students in Co-Taught Courses - If you are enrolling students into any of our co-teaching programs (OCS and the intervention courses), please review these notes on waitlisted students:

Students Added to Waitlist for Co-Teaching Sections During Drop/Add Period

If your school created a co-teaching course section in the NCVPS registration system and didn’t enroll students by the first day of class, NCVPS staff changed the enrollment cap for the section to “0”. If you attempt to enroll students in the section during the Drop/Add period, you will receive the message “Student Name added to waitlist” as seen in the image below. In this situation, your students will be added to the waitlist. Your school's section will be re-opened as teacher capacity allows.

Waitlisted Screenshot 1

Schools Creating Co-Teaching Course Sections After Drop/Add Period

The NCVPS registration system allows schools to create co-teaching course sections for the current semester after the drop/add period has ended. When this happens, you will receive the message “Student Name no room on waitlist” as seen in the image below. We would like to remind our partners that the creation of a section in the registration system does not imply or guarantee that NCVPS can accommodate additional enrollments. If your school needs to enroll students outside of the drop/add period, please submit a ticket via the Virtual Support Center. NCVPS staff will work with you to try to accommodate the enrollment request.

9/1/19

Drop/Add Date Extended - Due to school closings, we have extended our Drop/Add date to Sept. 11.

Hurricane Dorian - We have posted an Inclement Weather Announcement in response to Hurricane Dorian. We have a plan in place, and we will add updates to this page as they come in.

Early Start Students in Traditional Calendar Courses

It's absolutely fine to register early start students into our traditional calendar courses. Contact the NCVPS teachers right away and let them know when your students need to finish the course. NCVPS teachers will adjust the pacing guide for your students, but our teachers need to be aware of this early in the semester. They can't make that adjust late in the semester.

Student Course Access

Students will have access to their courses at 7 a.m. on the first day of classes. Before classes begin, students can go through our Canvas Orientation. We also have Pre-Instruction Resources for each class. These resources help students get a better understanding of courses before classes begin.

Catalog Updates for 2019 - 2020

NCVPS has released its Course Catalog for the 2019-2020 school year. We have a few notes to add to the release.

New Offerings

We have a number of new courses offerings in our 2019-2020 catalog:

  • English II Co-Teaching
  • Biology Co-Teaching
  • AP World History 1200 - Modern Times
  • Python Programming I

Returning to the Course Catalog

  • Arabic I

Spring Block AP Courses

We've added six AP courses to the spring block Early Start calendar:

  • AP Statistics
  • AP Biology
  • AP Calculus AB
  • AP Environmental Science
  • AP European History
  • AP Psychology

These courses will begin on January 6, 2020, and all schools can enroll students into these Early Start AP courses. These courses also have yearlong offerings.

Course Updates

Accounting 1 and Accounting 1 Honors - Both courses will be off the catalog for Fall 2019 in order to revise for the new course blueprint. The current course will run during Summer 2019, and the new version will run Spring 2020. There are no course code changes.

AP Mandarin - This course will remain off the catalog until revisions are complete. We are updating the courses for standards alignment and design.

AP Music - This course will remain off the catalog until revisions are complete. We are updating the courses for standards alignment and design.

AP U.S. History - This course will remain off the catalog until revisions are complete. We are updating the courses for standards alignment and design.

AP World History - The College Board has divided AP World History into two courses, Ancient and Modern Day. NCVPS will offer the Modern Day course, which has a new course code. We will look at developing the Ancients course in the future.

Arabic I - Arabic I is  now back in the catalog. Arabic I will have limited enrollment in the fall of 2019.

Arabic II - Arabic II will remain off the catalog until further progress can be made. We will definitely have Arabic II ready by Fall 2020. If you have seniors enrolled in the Arabic I course, they wouldn't be able to get that second credit by graduation. We can't guarantee that at this time.

Computer Programming I and Computer Programming I Honors - Both courses will remain in our course catalog. DPI will continue to support the standards through 2020.

Computer Programming 1 Chrome Update - Computer Programming 1 cannot be taken with a Chromebook. The software for Visual Basic requires a Windows-based environment and Chromebooks do not officially support Windows. If you are looking for a programming course for next year that can be taken on a Chromebook, we recommend SAS Programming or our new Python Course.

French III and IV now have yearlong options. Updated 4/12/19.

Music Courses - This course will remain off the catalog until revisions are complete. We are updating the courses for standards alignment and design.

Python Programming I - Enrollment is now open for Python Programming I; however, seating is limited. We will expand the course capacity each semester.

SAT Prep and ACT Prep - Summer 2019 will be the last time we offer these courses. We are working on a way to include both courses in an open commons that schools can use them as resources.

Spanish III and IV now have yearlong options. Updated 4/12/19.

Workforce Ready now has summer option. Updated 4/12/19.
