Parent UpdateWe know many parents are eager to support their students in our online courses. We have a guide for them developed by NCVirtual parents and teachers. Please share this guide with parents and legal guardians. School facilitators can use this, too!

A Guide for Parents and Facilitators

How to Help Your NCVirtual Student

One of the best ways to help students with their NCVirtual classes is to ensure they are logging in, working, and submitting assignments on or before their due dates. They will have work every school day. It could be something to study, read, watch, listen to, or an assignment to complete. And just like a traditional classroom, online students might need to study over the weekend.

Let’s take a look at all the ways you can help your student be successful.

Teacher Contact

Let the NCVirtual teacher know you are the student’s parent and you would like to assist in any way possible. You can let the teacher know anything about your student that will help the teacher better assess them and to find suitable supplemental content. The school’s e-learning advisor can provide the teacher’s contact information, or you can look for the “Meet Your Teacher” link on the homepage of every course.

Canvas Parent App and Portal

Download the Canvas Parent App or log in through the Canvas Web Portal. Both allow you to see your student’s grades and some course content. This is a great way to track your student’s progress and see what’s going on inside the course. You will need a “pairing code” from your student for both the app and portal. Find directions on our Canvas Parent App and Portal page.

Getting Started

Have students follow our Getting Started as an NCVirtual Student page. Getting a good start in the course is key to successful completion.

Daily Access

Be sure your student logs in each school day. Students may take their NCVPS courses from a school lab, but if they are working outside of school, be sure they have a dedicated workspace, an up-to-date computer, and internet access.

Pacing Guide & Due Dates

Each course has a pacing guide with due dates. Following the pacing guide is the major key to success. Depending on their situation, students may receive a pacing guide tailored specifically for them. Students should follow that guide closely.

Peer Tutoring Center

Have your student use the Peer Tutoring Center! This is a great resource. Peer tutors can help students in a variety of areas. Students can access the tutoring center from the home page of their course. See our Peer Tutoring page for details.

Printable Guides

Ensure students also have our Getting Started Checklist for NCVPS Students and Student Success Guide. Find more guides on our Printable Guides page.

Student Help

Teach your students to ask for help. There’s no reason to let a problem linger and get worse. If the student doesn’t know where to find help (and we have lots of help to give!), direct them to our Student Help page. See all the detailed student support features in one place.
