PROGRAM DETAILS:
We have been building and sustaining successful partnerships with North Carolina schools since 2007. During this time, the instructional delivery model has been primarily asynchronous. With a growing middle school population, we have now explored and launched a synchronous instructional delivery for interested participating schools. For 2024-2025 we saw a 20% increase in partnerships with schools participating in this program.
The “In Real Time” (IRT) pilot for 8th-grade core instruction began in Fall 2023 with selected schools. Course offerings were in 8th Grade ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science. In 2024-2025, the course offerings were expanded to the 7th grade and NC Math 1 (Middle/High).
For the 2025-2026 academic year course offerings will be 7th & 8th grade Science, Math, & ELA , as well as NC Math 1 (Middle/High) through our catalog. This program is designed to support instruction by providing a certified NCVPS teacher to work alongside a substitute or beginning teacher to provide quality instruction for students. Partnering School FAQs:
How does the IRT program work?
The NCVPS IRT program provides a LIVE virtual teacher who uses video conferencing to come directly into the partnering school’s classroom at a scheduled daily time to deliver direct instruction. IRT students continue to attend their traditional in-person school day and arrive in their classroom to learn during the scheduled class period, while the IRT teacher arrives in their classroom to teach via interactive video. Our experienced teachers are trained and supported to deliver LIVE virtual instruction that ensures both effective and engaging learning. Partnering North Carolina schools collaborate with us by providing support with a classroom facilitator to assist students in classrooms during class sessions, and with basic technology to connect each student to the IRT teacher and course curriculum.
What grade levels do IRT teachers teach?
NCVPS IRT instruction is offered in 7th and 8th-grade core courses: math, science, social studies, and English Language Arts. As well as Math 1.
How many classes or class periods can a partnering school register with IRT?
The number of classes is based on NCVPS teacher capacity. NCVPS will work to accommodate the needs of the partnering school.
When will my school’s synchronous sessions take place?
Schools will select from 5 pre-defined 75-minute windows for synchronous instruction to occur between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm. The school will be able to personalize the start time of the 45-minute synchronous session within the selected 75-minute window.
When do IRT enrollments open and close?
IRT follows the NCVPS calendar dates for enrollment.
What happens if my school is not in session on one of our scheduled synchronous session days?
Teachers will work with the face-to-face facilitator to reschedule the session for another day.
How are IEPs and 504s handled within IRT?
The IRT program model and tools allow teachers to meet students where they are and help them grow.
IRT can offer students tools such as captioning in the LIVE teacher as they talk using the translation tool so that each student can receive instruction in their first language.
It is the school district’s responsibility to notify NCVPS if a student enrolled in a course requires an accommodation.
