“One pleasant surprise about taking online classes was how connected I still felt with my teacher and classmates. I expected it to feel distant or isolating, but there were actually lots of opportunities to interact through messages, discussion boards, and feedback.” – Anita D.
“It’s been a joy to teach Anita in both English 2 and English 3. Over the past year, I’ve watched her grow as a confident, thoughtful, and determined learner. Anita takes ownership of her education—she asks questions when something isn’t clear, carefully reviews feedback, and puts in the extra effort to revise and improve her work. She doesn’t give up and always strives to do her best. Her persistence, self-advocacy, and positive attitude make her stand out as a truly super student.” – NCVPS Blended English Instructor, Ashley Rennie
Anita’s Story
As a student, I’m hardworking, curious, and determined to do my best. I take my education seriously and always try to stay organized and responsible.
What has shaped me the most is the support of my family, the challenges I’ve faced with balancing school and other responsibilities, and the lessons I’ve learned from both success and failure.
What makes me “me’ is my positive attitude and willingness to keep trying even when things get tough.
Online Experience
I chose to take an NCVPS class because it allowed me to fit a course into my schedule that wasn’t available at my school or conflicted with other classes I needed to take.
I‘ve taken English 1 and Introduction to Mathematics 1 in 2022-2023. In 2023-2024 I’ve taken English 2, Found Prin USA & NC: Civic Literacy, and Math 1, and in 2024-2025 I’ve taken Biology, English 3, and Financial Management.
Taking an online course helped me become more independent and responsible for my own learning. It also allowed me to explore a subject I was interested in but couldn’t access at my regular school.
My advice to other online students is to stay organized and manage your time carefully. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help—your teachers are there to support you, even if you’re not in a physical classroom.
Life Outside of School
In my free time I like to listen to relaxing music and study my Spanish flashcards on Quizlet. In the Special Olympics, I like swimming in the pool and meeting my friend Brandon. The hobbies I have are piano/voice lessons and swimming.
My favorite movie is the Barbie Movie, and my favorite snack is white cheddar Cheez-Its.
I could not live without my journal.
Goals & Future Plans
A personal goal that I had at school was to stay in the classroom and learn without crying and journaling if I have a problem without crying and to get A’s and B’s in all of my OCS classes this semester.
10 years from now, in 2035, my goal is to live independently.
