“A pleasant surprise that I experienced while taking an online course through NCVirtual was how easy it was to communicate with teachers and fellow students and how supportive the teacher was. My environmental science teacher was always very quick to respond to my questions and help resolve any issues that I encountered and would offer excellent feedback on the assignments that I submitted and send links to additional educational resources. I also enjoyed the freedom that NCVirtual offered me, such as being able to complete assignments at my own pace and at any time, as long as it was submitted before the due date at the end of the week.” – Evan S.
“Evan always goes above and beyond on assignments in class. Not only do all assignments meet expectations, but most exceed expectations. In addition, many assignments contain content beyond that taught in the course. Evan also always completes extra credit assignments in AP Classroom. The sample of work below is an assignment in which students were to create a plan for an environmentally friendly city using knowledge from the course. Evan went above and beyond on this assignment. The detailed description that he writes is fantastic and shows his knowledge of many ideas in the course.” – Christi Joyner, NCVirtual AP Environmental Science Teacher
Evan’s NCVirtual Experience
I have always been intrigued by the idea of taking a class remotely, and as my school did not offer AP Environmental Science as a semester-long course, I decided to take the course through NCVirtual to allow for more flexibility in choosing my class schedule.
I took AP Environmental Science through North Carolina Virtual, which allowed me to gain more insight into the natural systems that make up our planet and how human activity and interactions can both help and harm the natural world.
Taking AP Environmental Science through North Carolina Virtual introduced me to online courses and allowed me to experience the benefits that they offered over a more traditional classroom. In particular, the freedom and flexibility that taking an online course offered allowed me to be more accountable and responsible for my own education while also allowing me to learn at a pace that I felt comfortable with.
To other online students and prospective online students, I would advise them to take advantage of the resources that an online classroom offers, such as the videos, slideshows, and notes provided to them by their teachers. I would also advise online students to develop strong time management skills and avoid procrastinating on assignments, which can lead to students being overwhelmed. It is also essential for students to maintain communication with their teachers and ask questions or ask for help when they need it.
Life Outside of School
Outside of school, I enjoy a number of activities, including biking, swimming, badminton, gardening, and cooking. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, and I love reading, writing, and watching movies. I am currently a member of Future Business Leaders of America, where I have competed and won state and national level awards.
My favorite book and author would have to be The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien. I admire Tolkien’s mastery of prose and his vivid, descriptive language, which allow you to picture the elaborate world and characters that he created in The Lord of the Rings.
The Future: Goals & Plans
A goal that I had this semester was to maintain a grade of 90 or above in all of my courses and begin preparing for university. I am working towards reaching this goal through careful time management, and by utilizing the educational resources I have available to me.
My future plans are to attend and graduate from university after high school and to start my career within the next few years. I have already finished applying to universities, and I will likely apply for internships and expand my social connections to help me reach these goals.
