“Taking an online course allowed me to work at my own pace and take the courses that I personally wanted to. For example, by taking AP Psychology through NCVirtual, I was able to get a lot more insight into what Psychology was, and I was able to find out that this is an area that interests me. The courses I’ve taken through NCVirtual have allowed me to work my way to finish high school successfully and figure out what I want to do in the future.” – Pranathi G.

“Pranathi is a 10th grader enrolled in NC Virtual Public Schools (NCVPS). She has been a member of NC Virtual’s Coding Club since November 2020 becoming the club’s Vice President in October 2021. In addition to leading the coding club, Pranathi is also an NCVPS Peer Tutoring Center Tutor, participated in the 2021 Ready, Set, App (RSA) competition (in which the Coding Club’s App, College Atlas was a Phase 2 Winner), was invited to join the Google Code Next Program in August 2021, is currently participating in the 2022 RSA competition, and has now won the Regional NCWIT AiC Award for Raleigh Durham and Coast. She is truly an awesome student and I could not be more proud!” – Toni Hall, NCVirtual CTE Instructor and Coding Club Advisor

Pranathi’s NCVirtual Experience
I first took an NCVirtual class, as my school had offered it to us for Math 3 Honors. Due to falling in love with the course and NCVirtual overall, I continued to take courses over the summer and now, I’m able to take courses that I’m interested in.

I have taken Math 3 Honors, Earth & Environmental Science Honors, American History: The Founding Principles, Civics, and Economics Honors, Pre-Calculus Honors, World History Honors, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Psychology, AP Calculus AB, and Chemistry Honors through NCVirtual.

Taking an online course allowed me to work at my own pace and take the courses that I personally wanted to. We are given feedback and even allowed second attempts on some of our assignments which is very beneficial because it allows us to perfect ourselves and learn from our mistakes. I love the flexibility that we have by taking online courses.

Tips for Online Students
My advice is to log in to your course daily, follow the pacing guide, and check the announcements. This will allow you to know what is coming up for the week and what you need to be working on each day. Be sure to check the feedback as well because there is really important information given, along with links that will allow you to dive deeper into the topic and understand it better. I would also tell other online students to constantly check in with their teachers and ask questions! Whether it’s a question about an assignment, or if you just want to meet up to discuss a topic in class, the teachers are always there to help! Apart from this, I would advise all students to make use of the Peer Tutoring Center. This place has many resources for every student ranging from tutoring, the Virtual Buddy program, the Writing Center, TutorTalk, and so much more!

Outside of School
In my free time, I love listening to music or watching movies with my parents. I personally love Tollywood movies, and I’m open to any movie and/or genre (except Horror, that is). If I have more time on my hands, I read books and webcomics, and sometimes I just scroll through Instagram. I also love designing, so if I’m ever done with all of my work, I apply henna to my hands. It takes a lot of time and I have to be patient, but it’s something that I truly enjoy! I also love writing short stories! I’m a part of the Peer Tutoring Center and NCVirtual Coding Club, so I spend a lot of my free time tutoring, marketing, and working to enhance these programs.

My favorite all-time book is Wonder by R. J. Palacio! I think I was in 5th grade when I first read this book, but it’s still my favorite. There is just so much emotion and important themes that we can all take from this book. This book also had a huge influence on me because it is one of the main reasons that I was interested in writing, and now, I eventually hope to write my own book!

My favorite show is Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir. I was first introduced to this show when I moved to North Carolina in 7th grade, and it’s been one of my favorite shows ever since! While this is technically a “kids show,” it’s still very fun to watch and be a part of. All my friends and I love this show!

Interesting Facts
If I could have a superpower, I would love for it to be telekinesis or teleportation. Being able to move items without having to physically get up would be amazing, but since all of my relatives live in India, being able to teleport would allow me to visit my family every day, and yet still make it back in time for school.

Ice cream! I love ice cream and there is never a wrong time to eat it! I’ll eat it on the hot summer days or even on the coldest winter nights. My favorite ice cream flavors, for now, are Cake Batter, Butter Pecan, and Butterscotch.

I could most certainly not live without my parents and family! Everyone is so precious to me and they mean everything to me! If it had to be an item, though, I would probably say my computer. From school, to clubs and extracurriculars, to even recreational activities, everything that I do is on my computer.

Current Goals & Future Plans
For this semester, my biggest goal was to successfully complete all of my courses and get a high A on all of them, both in-person and online. I also wanted to make sure that I mastered the content and material of the subjects along the way, not only working for the grade. To reach this goal, I constantly reviewed the content from my classes and I found many practice questions to help me master the topics. I always looked at the syllabus and asked my teachers or parents any questions that I had so that I got all of the information that I wanted.

In terms of my profession, I would like to become a doctor in the future. By successfully graduating from high school and getting into a top university, I believe I’ll be on the right track to becoming a doctor. During this time, I want to do well in my courses and get a high GPA and also explore activities and clubs to help me figure out exactly what type of doctor I would like to be. I’m interested in Psychology, neuroscience, computer science, and designing, so I want to find an area that allows me to combine my interests into a profession that best fits me.

Personal Notes
In the future, I want to travel around the world, but my dream place that I want to visit is Paris!

I can fluently speak Telugu, and I’m currently learning Sanskrit from my grandfather.
