Super Student Eva N“I was pleasantly surprised how invested all of the teachers have been. They rapidly communicate with any questions I have, and they post many announcements and emails to get us ready for upcoming assignments & tests. My AP Calc AB teacher will even set up virtual meetings with us if we don’t understand something!” – Eva N.

“Eva has been an outstanding peer tutor and an incredible asset to our Peer Tutoring Center (PTC) team! She generously dedicates many of her afternoons to being available for students who need tutoring, always approaching each session with patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

Beyond her tutoring responsibilities, Eva is consistently willing to step up and lend a hand with PTC meetings, special projects, and other tasks whenever needed. Her reliability, positive attitude, and commitment to supporting her fellow students truly make a difference.

We are incredibly fortunate to have Eva as such a valuable and dedicated member of the PTC team. Congratulations, Eva, on this well-deserved recognition!” – NCVPS Peer Tutoring Instructional Leader, Kathryn Michel

Eva’s Story

As a student and individual, I think my biggest strength is that I am hardworking and diligent. I am willing & happy to admit it when I am not the smartest one in the room. However, I believe that my strong work ethic and diligence will help me be very successful and fulfilled in life. In addition, I would like to think that I am kind, compassionate, and respectful of others. What shapes me and makes me, me is my goal to make a positive difference in the word. I strive to someday help the earth and those around me in some meaningful way. I also owe my parents, siblings, friends, and other influential figures a large credit for shaping me into the person that I am today.

Online Experience

While I love my home school and enjoy the opportunities that it gives me, it does not always offer the most advanced options for classes. In middle school, I was looking for an extra challenge in math and spanish, and NCVPS allowed me to pursue this. Again, as I transitioned from middle school to high school, I was very excited to learn and was looking for additional enrichment. My enthusiasm led me to take another online class through NCVPS over the summer.

I have taken Math II Honors, Spanish II, Chemistry Honors, Calculus AB, and I am a member of the Peer Tutoring Center.

Taking Math II, Spanish II, and Chemistry through NCVPS has all positively influenced my academic path, allowing me to be more advanced than many of my peers. My pursuance of these classes has definitely played a large part in where I am at today. Currently in math, I am taking Calculus AB (through NCVPS, I might add). I have also recently started a Math Honors Society Chapter at my school. In addition, I am part of a Math Circle group where I help younger kids see the wonders of math and learn advanced topics. Since taking Spanish II online, I have also completed Spanish III, and have joined a Spanish Honors Society at my school. Lastly, taking chemistry over the summer has allowed me to take new science classes this year that would not otherwise have fit into my schedule. This year, I am taking AP Environmental Science and Honors Biomedical Engineering, which I am very excited about. Taking the level of classes that I do today would not have been possible without NCVPS.

My advice to other students: I suggest that you keep track of your assignments and make sure that you don’t get behind schedule. In fact, I find it helpful to get a couple of days ahead, so that if something comes up, you are not in a rush to get your work done on time. I think that if you have a great opportunity before you (such as the power to work ahead), then you should take it.

I also want to emphasize how important it is to communicate with teachers. They are there to help you!

Goals & Future Plans

This semester, I am working towards my Eagle Scout project. I am converting a shipping container into a shed for my track team at my school. However, the shed won’t be like any other shed. With a plan to add additional equipment (including a pull-up bar, a sitting bench, and attachments for resistant band/battle rope) to the outside of the shed, the container will also serve as a structure for cross-fit activities & workouts.

My goal is to have my project mostly completed by the end of the semester. To reach this goal, I have been working hard to design my structure and submit all permits necessary for my project. I will also need to plan out the actual execution of my plan, including buying materials and leading volunteers. Although there are many details, I am very excited for my project!

In the future, I would like to become an Industrial Design Engineer. To achieve this career goal, I need to do my best to pursue classes that will help me explore these interests. Next semester, I am going to take a Biomedical Engineering class through the North Carolina School of Science and Math. In addition, I am going to take Adobe Visual Design, which teaches about the basic elements of design and introduces 3D designing. Finding the right classes at my small school has been challenging, but I have been trying my best to take interesting classes (and NCVPS has also helped me with this). I can also have good scholarship by keeping good grades, doing quality work, and always searching for more ways to learn.

Taking any engineering class that I can and demonstrating good scholarship is how I plan on reaching my goals and aspirations for the future.

Life Outside of School

I like to participate in sports (cross country, swimming and track & field). I also enjoy participating in a math circle called Chapel Hill Math Circle. In addition, I am part of multiple clubs through my school including Mu Alpha Theta, Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, Science National Honors Society, Fellowship of Christian Students, Applied Sports Psychology, and Kids Helping Kids. I also love to participate in my Scouting America troop. Besides these structured activities, I spend my downtime doing crafts (such as sewing, papier mache, and other makerspace-type crafts) or reading. Lastly, I like to travel.

I don’t really have a favorite book/author/song/musician/show/movie. The best thing that I can think of is that I like the Napoleon Dynamite movie. 🙂

Fun Facts

  • I am a triplet!
  • I love to eat rice cakes with half peanut butter and half nutella on top. It is my go-to snack before any activity, especially before a run or race.
  • I don’t think I could live without my water bottle. I bring it with me almost everywhere, and it has saved me numerous times when I am very thirsty!!! On the contrary, when I forget to bring my water bottle with me, I usually really wish that I had it.

Eva and Cross CountryPersonal Notes

I am a tutor for the Peer Tutoring Center at NCVPS. I have enjoyed participation as a tutor (and Virtual Buddy) since the 2024/2025 school year. In addition, I am expected to become a Team Lead for my PTC group. Being part of the PTC has been very special to me, and I love having the chance to help other students through their NCVPS courses. Every time I help a student and see them succeed, I feel very grateful that this program is possible.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity and making this program possible. It is very unique!
